Managing Your Dental Health

Cavities are widely common; in fact, they are almost as prevalent as the common cold. Fortunately for us, cavities are actually preventable; by taking good care of your teeth, practicing good dental habits, and routinely visiting the dentist, you can prevent harmful plaque and tartar from causing tooth decay, cavities, and gum disease altogether!Want a beautiful, healthy smile for years to come? Here are a few ways you can better manage your dental health:

  1. Brush Your Teeth Twice a Day

While you may be good about brushing your teeth twice a day, there are a surprising number of patients who don’t consistently do this. Brushing your teeth in the morning will help eliminate lingering bacteria that can cause bad breath overnight; brushing your teeth again in the evenings before you go to bed will eliminate small food particles that might have collected throughout the day from meals, as well as the plaque that are attracted to the sugars and starches that these meals leave behind on your teeth.

  1. Floss Your Teeth Once a Day

Another dental practice that isn’t performed among many patients is flossing daily. Dental floss has the ability to clean the spaces in-between your teeth that a regular toothbrush can’t reach. That means that by flossing, you can remove hard-to-reach plaque that left alone could eventually cause damage to your teeth. Flossing can also help remove small food particles that get stuck in your teeth after you eat.

  1. Drink Plenty of Water

Did you know that there are about 10 to 12 teaspoons of sugar in a single can of soda? This large amount of sugar can attract a lot of plaque that can produce acids that cause tooth decay and cavities. Instead of sugary sodas or fruit juices, try to drink more water throughout the day. Not only is it good for your overall health, it’s also good for your teeth! In fact, natural water contains fluoride, a mineral that actually helps strengthen your enamel to further protect it against cavity formation.

While all of these methods are good for managing your dental health at home, that’s not all you can do to keep your smile healthy. Visiting the dentist at least once every six months will further help keep tooth decay and gum disease at bay. Dentists can perform regular exams, cleanings, and other preventative methods to keep your dental health at its best!
